Aladdin's Software Protection Systems Come out on Top in NSTL Tests
-
Company's Flagship Product Line, HASP, Leads in Every Category
-
New York, NY, January 26, 1999 - Aladdin Knowledge
Systems (NASDAQ:
ALDN, a global leader in the field of Internet
and information security, today announced that the Company's MemoHASP and NetHASP
Software Protection devices outscored Rainbow Technologies, Inc.'s (NASDAQ: RNBO)
Sentinel dongles in a one-on-one comparison recently completed by the independent
testing organization, NSTL, on behalf of Aladdin. NSTL is a division of CMP Media
Inc. MemoHASP and NetHASP are two core products in Aladdin's HASP line of software
protection systems.
-
The NSTL report awarded HASP an overall score of 8.5 out of a possible 10 points
compared with Sentinel's 6.0.
-
HASP scored higher in each of the categories: security, ease of use, network key
features, versatility and compatibility. Noteworthy was the test performance of
Aladdin's network key, especially given the increasing concern about illegal software
usage in the corporate market, which is estimated to have reached a level approaching
50% (SPA/BSA 1998 Survey). NetHASP was the clear winner, scoring 9.8 out of a possible
10, with Rainbow's NetSentinel scoring 4.4.

"We welcome this independent confirmation of our decision to select NetHASP to protect
the latest version of QuarkXPress," says Michael Johnson, QuarkXPress program manager.
"It only serves to underscore our confidence in Aladdin and its industry-leading
line of software protection products." In December of 1998, Quark selected Aladdin's
NetHASP software protection key to protect network-based versions of QuarkXPress
Passport 4.04 and QuarkXPress 4.04 International English configurations.
-
Yanki Margalit, Aladdin's CEO and President, says, "The NSTL study confirms once
again Aladdin's leadership position in the software protection industry. The continuous
resources we have poured into developing and improving our products has been vindicated
by this report, and our commitment to research and development remains total. We
intend to maintain HASP's position as the most effective and secure software protection
system in the industry, because that's what our clients demand and expect."
-
Highlights from the Report:
-
- Security:
"The Rainbow Sentinel product's Shell security function score is also only 59% of
that of the Aladdin HASP product. [Test score: HASP 8.0: Sentinel 4.7] This is attributable
to such significant weaknesses in the Rainbow product as the lack of Shell protection
for network keys, lack of anti-debugging techniques, lack of DOS interrupt 01 &
03 locks and absence of multi-layer wrapping for a much improved and impenetrable
security option."
The report also noted that "[Sentinel's] API security implementation is rather weak."
[Test Score: HASP 9.0: Sentinel 0.2]
- Ease of Use:
"..the Sentinel product trails by significant margins. Due to a very flexible and
rich Envelope security option, the HASP product leads its competitor by almost a
factor of three in the Envelope/Shell Ease of Use subcategory score."
- Compatibility:
"Rainbow documentation and FAQ's on their Website specifically mention security
key daisy-chaining constraints, and hardware revision incompatibilities among selected
security keys. As a result of this known limitation, the Sentinel Developer Kit's
compatibility evaluation score is significantly lower than that of the Aladdin HASP
product family."
- Network Key Features:
"The Aladdin HASP security key product family once again shines in the Network Security
Key Features evaluation, receiving more than twice the overall subcategory score
of its competitor. This superior Network Key Features score is attributable to the
security functions of the NetHASP, as well as the license management features of
the LM [License Manager] program."
- Versatility:
"The Aladdin HASP's overall Versatility score superiority stems not only from leading
in almost all of the nine subcategories, but also in leading in the more significant
subcategories, such as Envelope and API Features, by wide margins."
-
Aladdin has been firmly establishing its leadership in information technology security
on both the software and Internet security fronts. Earlier this month, Aladdin's
Internet Security Unit received independent confirmation of the superiority of its
eSafe Protect product over "Guard Dog" of Network Associates' (NASDAQ: NETA) in
a head-to-head comparison published in PC Computing magazine's January 1999 edition.
PC Computing tests compared several key features for Internet security, including
anti-virus protection, anti-vandal protection and personal firewalls.
